MatJSON exists to make materials data interoperable across people, APIs, workflow engines, analytics systems, and AI tools. It aims to reduce repeated extraction work, brittle custom parsers, ambiguous requirement interpretation, and disconnected compliance evidence.

MatJSON was created by an experienced professional mechanical engineer with practical web and software development experience to address the lack of a common, machine-readable way to communicate materials data across specifications, standards, MTRs, compliance checks, APIs, automation, and AI.

The initial use cases come from pressure equipment and heat exchangers, but the architecture also applies to aerospace, automotive, structural steel, pipelines, nuclear, marine, medical-device alloys, additive manufacturing, electrical conductors, and composites.
Publication boundary
Open MatJSON schemas do not grant rights to redistribute proprietary engineering standards or complete derived requirements libraries. The public project should emphasize original schemas, tools, vocabularies, synthetic examples, and metadata-first registries.
